Profile

The Ruspoli-Candriano Castle is located in the historic center of Torella dei Lombardi. Situated on the upper part of the ancient medieval settlement, the fortress was originally built during the Lombard period, between the 9th and 12th centuries. Later renovated under Norman-Swabian rule (12th–13th century), it underwent further restructuring between the 12th and 15th centuries, particularly after the earthquake of 1466. Following that event, two cylindrical towers with sloping bases were added to the manor to incorporate the pre-existing square towers, each with a specific function: the first was built for defensive purposes and housed the shooting positions, while the second served a simpler, utilitarian role.
In the 17th century, at the behest of the Caracciolo family, the Castle was transformed into a palatial residence. Following the union between the Princes of Candriano and the Ruspoli family—sealed by the marriage of Laura Caracciolo and Emanuele Ruspoli—the building took on its current name. The noble Roman family retained ownership of the Ruspoli-Candriano Castle until 1959, when Terry Margherita Blanc, widow of Camillo Ruspoli, donated it to the municipal administration of Torella dei Lombardi.
Rebuilt once again after the earthquake of November 23, 1980, the Castle still stands out today for its massive cylindrical donjon. Now serving as the town hall, it also houses the Turella Parva Turris Civic Museum, created to display artifacts discovered during the archaeological investigations carried out in the Castle itself in the 1990s by archaeologist Marcello Rotili and published in the volume “Post-Classical Archaeology in Torella dei Lombardi – Research at the Candriano Castle (1993–1997)”.
Within the Ruspoli-Candriano Castle are also located the Pro Loco Candriano association, a restaurant (which also offers accommodations for tourists and travelers), and a Cinema Museum featuring an exhibition entirely dedicated to the films of the celebrated Western director Sergio Leone (1929–1989), organized by the association bearing his name, as well as a council/conference hall.
